What Drives the Fishing Score

7-Day Catch Forecast

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fishing weather?

Fishing weather is the combination of conditions that influence how actively fish feed. Our AI analyzed thousands of catch records and found that water level and wind are the strongest predictors. Calm conditions with lower water levels consistently produce more catches.

Does rain affect fishing?

Our model shows that rain itself has very little impact on catch rates. Dry days score slightly better, but the difference is minimal. What matters more is what comes with rain: changing pressure, wind and cloud cover.

Is wind good or bad for fishing?

Calmer is better. Our catch data shows that low wind speeds lead to significantly more catches. As wind picks up, catch rates drop steadily. This is one of the two most important factors in our model.

Should I fish in cold or warm weather?

Warmer is generally better. The model shows catch rates increasing as temperatures rise, with the sweet spot in the warmer months. Water temperature from Rijkswaterstaat stations confirms this: fish are more active in warmer water.

What time of day is best for fishing?

Early morning and evening tend to be the most productive. Fish are generally more active during these transitions around dawn and dusk. Moon phase also shows up as a factor in our model, though its effect is modest compared to weather.

Does moon phase affect fishing?

It depends on the species. Eel for example becomes noticeably more active during new moon and lunar eclipses because it prefers dark nights. Pikeperch is the opposite: it hunts by sight at night and thrives under a bright full moon. Our species-specific models capture these differences.

Does air pressure matter for fishing?

Air pressure shows up as a moderate factor in our model. Fish sense pressure changes through their swim bladder. Our data suggests that stable or gently changing pressure produces more consistent catches than rapid swings, but it ranks well below wind and water level in importance.

Is cloudy or sunny weather better for fishing?

Our model shows that clearer skies tend to score slightly better for overall catch rates. This goes against the common belief that overcast skies are always better. That said, the effect is modest and likely varies by species, since some predators prefer low light conditions.

Does water level affect fishing?

Water level is the single strongest predictor in our catch model. Lower water levels concentrate fish and their prey in smaller areas, making them easier to find and catch. This factor alone accounts for more of the forecast score than any other.

Is the fishing forecast the same for every fish species?

No. The general forecast on this page uses a model trained on all species combined. But each species reacts differently to weather conditions. That is why we also train separate models per species, which you can explore on our species pages. View all species →
