Identification

A small goby of 6 to 10 cm with a stocky body and broad head. Characteristic two dark crossbands on the first dorsal fin. Light brown to greyish-brown with fine dark speckles.

Ecology

Native to East Asia (Japan, Korea, China). Lives in estuaries, brackish harbors, and river mouths. Tolerates both fresh and salt water.

An invasive exotic spread via shipping. Records in European harbors increasing. May compete with native goby species.
