Identification
The sand goby is a small, sand-colored goby of 5 to 7 cm with a relatively large head. Light sand-brown with dark spots along the side. A prominent dark spot on the rear edge of the first dorsal fin.
Ecology
One of the most abundant fish species in the North Sea and coastal waters. A crucial food web link as prey for larger fish, seabirds, and seals. Males build nests in empty shells and guard the eggs.

Extremely abundant in the Wadden Sea, North Sea, and Zeeland waters. One of the most important food sources for young cod and terns.
