Identification

The tench is a sturdy, stocky fish with a characteristic olive-green to golden-brown body and a remarkably thick slime coating. The scales are tiny and deeply embedded in the skin, giving the fish a smooth, almost leathery feel. The fins are broad and rounded, without spines. A unique feature is the sexual dimorphism: in males, the pelvic fins are enlarged and convex in shape, while in females they are smaller and flat. The eyes are small and red-orange. Confusion with other species is rare — the combination of olive-green color, thick slime coating, and rounded fins makes the tench unmistakable.

Behavior & ecology

The tench is a bottom-dwelling fish that lives in muddy, densely vegetated water. With its thick lips and two short barbels, it searches the bottom for worms, snails, midge larvae, and small shellfish. The species is remarkably tolerant of low oxygen levels and can survive where many other fish give up — still, warm ponds with a thick layer of bottom silt.

The tench is a pronounced crepuscular fish. The classic tench bite falls at first light and around sunset. During the day, the fish retreats to deeper water or the shelter of aquatic plants. Spawning takes place from May to July at water temperatures above 18°C, in densely vegetated shallow water. Tench grow slowly but can live over 20 years.

Fishing techniques

Tench fishing requires patience and good timing. The most effective methods:

  • Float fishing with a waggler: The classic tench method. A corn-worm combination on a size 8-12 hook, presented on the bottom with a waggler float. The slowly sinking float on a tench bite is an iconic sight.
  • Corn and bread paste: Sweetcorn on the hook with loose corn as feed. Bread paste with a touch of honey is an old-fashioned but effective tench bait.
  • Method feeder: A small method feeder with fine, dark groundbait. A mini boilie on a hair below the hook works excellently — the tench hooks itself. Also effective with a worm or double maggot.
  • Pre-baiting: Feed the swim the evening before with corn, chopped worms, and a little dark groundbait. The tench will return to the feed spot the next morning.

Always fish close to aquatic plants, reed beds, or overhanging vegetation. Use a medium rod (3.30-3.60m). The best bite falls around sunrise and sunset.

In the Netherlands

Tench are found throughout the Netherlands but are nowhere truly abundant. The species has a strong preference for ponds, ditches, and polder waters with a muddy bottom and rich plant growth. In large canals and rivers, tench are rare. There is no closed season. Tench hold a special place in Dutch angling culture — it's a fish you must deliberately seek out and be at the water at the right moment for. Catching a fine tench is considered a special experience by many anglers.
