Joshua Rijnhart with the carp he caught at Westzaan on 6 April 2026
Ik wist niet wanneer ik moest gaan voor m'n eerste karper van het seizoen. Visscanner wees maandag 6 april aan als beste dag van de week, met 1.8× Karper Activiteit in Westzaan. Gegaan, eerste beet raak. Eerlijk verbluft hoe accuraat dit is.

I didn't know when to go for my first carp of the season. VisScanner picked Monday 6 April as best day of the week, with 1.8× Carp Activity in Westzaan. I went — first bite, landed. Honestly stunned by how accurate this is.

The daily catch score and the 7-day forecast are temporarily paused: they are built on a catch dataset we are not currently licensed to use commercially. Paused features are not part of what you buy — they return once the licence is settled, at no extra cost.

A depth map shows a lake's depth, bottom structure and edges over the aerial photo. The map says where the depth data comes from.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Plans are billed monthly and you cancel with one click in your account. You keep access until the end of the paid period; there are no cancellation fees.

Does Free stay free?

Yes. Free isn't a trial but a permanent plan: full data for perch, roach and bream, including their catch and XXL hotspots (national and local) and area analysis. No credit card needed.

Why do the forecasts say “paused”?

The catch forecast is built on a catch dataset with a non-commercial licence. We paused that layer rather than keep it online on that basis. Paused features are not counted in what you buy; once the licence is settled they come back to the plan they belong to, at no extra cost. The season chart and the 48-hour forecasts by hour and by size are back. We build them on the catch reports from mijnvismaat.nl, with permission from Sportvisunie, and they are free for everyone.

Where does the data come from?

From open sources: water quality from Rijkswaterstaat, weather from KNMI, nature observations via GBIF. On top of that run our own machine-learning models, recomputed every night. The season chart and the 48-hour forecasts come from the catch reports on mijnvismaat.nl, with permission from Sportvisunie.

How reliable are the forecasts?

They're modern machine-learning models — gradient boosting and random forests — trained on thousands of real catches and the conditions they happened in, and retrained every night on fresh data. They give you an edge, not a guarantee — fishing stays fishing. We show which factors the model weighs for every forecast.

What's the difference between Explorer and Specialist?

Explorer opens all common species and the full intelligence layer: national and local catch hotspots, habitat predictions and full statistics. Specialist adds the premium maps: satellite imagery to 10 cm, national and local XXL hotspots and the lake depth maps — plus data for all species, including carp, catfish and rare species.

Which lakes have a depth map?

Every lake with its own page, where we know that lake's depth. You can see which lakes have a page under Lakes. You see the depth, the bottom structure and the edges over the aerial photo. The IJsselmeer depth map is free for everyone; the others come with Specialist. More lakes are added over time.

How much data is behind VisScanner?

The database holds 45.9 million recorded fish of 181 species, 1965–2026, from scientific fish surveys by the Dutch water authorities, Rijkswaterstaat, ICES, Sportvisserij Nederland and STOWA. For example: bream 2.5 million, roach 2.4 million, perch 1.9 million, pike 194,953, zander 141,058 and carp 48,041. Plus the food web they live on: 245 million micro-organisms and 34.9 million invertebrates, each one counted, and 1.2 million plant observations. See the figures per species.

Isn't catch data biased? How do you deal with that?

It is, and VisScanner is built around that. Anglers report where they fish and every net catches different fish. So we have found several ways to measure how much anglers fish: their fishing effort. We also correct for how the fish were caught, and test every model on places it never saw. How we deal with biased data.

How does the free trial work?

Every free account gets 14 days of everything in Specialist, once: every species, the XXL hotspots, the satellite images and the depth maps. You enter no credit card and no subscription starts. After 14 days your account simply goes back to Free. If you want more after that, you choose Explorer or Specialist yourself.
