Bokvis

Boops boops

Sparidae Season Open

Identification

The bogue is an elongated sea bream of 15-25 cm (maximum 40 cm) with large eyes and a small mouth. The body is silvery with 3-5 golden-yellow lateral stripes. The back is blue-green. The small mouth has weak teeth adapted for plant material.

Ecology

Lives in large schools in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, from the coast to about 100 meters depth. Unusual for a sea bream, the bogue is largely omnivorous, feeding mainly on crustaceans and plankton: the diet consists mainly of seagrass and algae, supplemented with plankton.

In the Netherlands

A rare warm-water visitor in the North Sea. Very occasionally observed, usually during warm summers.
