Identification
The Norwegian topknot is a very small flatfish reaching only 12 cm. The body is broadly oval with eyes on the left side. Upper side yellowish-brown to grey-brown with scattered dark spots. The large mouth extends beyond the eye — surprisingly big for such a small fish.
Ecology
Unlike most flatfish, the Norwegian topknot lives on rocky, hard bottoms and among seaweed, at 10 to 200 meters depth. Its small size makes it difficult to spot among algal growth. Feeds on small crustaceans and worms.
In the Netherlands
Found in the North Sea, especially the northern parts where more rocky substrate is present. Due to its tiny size, it has no commercial or angling value and is rarely noticed.
