Tub Gurnard
Chelidonichthys lucerna
Identification
A striking bottom fish of 30 to 60 cm with a large, armored head. Reddish-brown back. The large pectoral fins are spectacular: bright blue with green spots on the inner side. The lower three pectoral fin rays are free and serve as 'fingers' to walk on the seabed.
Behavior & ecology
Walks on the seabed using free fin rays, which also detect prey by probing the bottom. Produces grunting sounds with the swim bladder. Hunts shrimp, crabs, small fish, and worms.
Fishing techniques
Takes bait eagerly and bites hard. Fish with shrimp, fish strips, or worm on a bottom rig. Best in summer months on sand and gravel bottoms.
In the Netherlands
Common in the North Sea, especially in the southern part. Regularly caught by boat anglers. Also commercially fished for bouillabaisse.
