Thinlip Grey Mullet
Chelon ramada
Identification
The thinlip mullet closely resembles the thick-lipped grey mullet but has a thinner upper lip without prominent papillae. The body is more slender and silvery. A reliable feature is the golden-yellow spot on the gill cover. Reaches 30 to 50 cm.
Behavior & ecology
Lives in coastal waters, estuaries, and rivers, penetrating further into fresh water than the thick-lipped mullet. Feeds on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates. A truly euryhaline species thriving in both salt and fresh water.
In the Netherlands
Found in the Westerschelde, Oosterschelde, and along the coast, but less common than the thick-lipped mullet. Often confused with its relative, making actual occurrence difficult to determine.
