Identification

The ide is a robust, silvery cyprinid with a stocky, rounded body noticeably broader than a roach. The back is grey-green to blue-grey, the flanks silver, and the belly white. The pelvic and anal fins have a distinctive orange-red to pink hue, especially visible in adult fish. The mouth is small and terminal. Confusion with roach is common, but the ide has smaller scales (55-61 along the lateral line versus 42-45 in roach), a broader head, and a more massive body. The eyes are yellow-green — not red like roach. Large ide reach 50-60 cm and become substantial, broad-bodied fish.

Behavior & ecology

The ide is an active, fast-swimming fish found in both flowing and still water. It prefers the upper water layers and is one of the few cyprinids that regularly feeds at the surface on insects — in summer, rising ide are a familiar sight on rivers and canals. The diet is varied: insects, insect larvae, aquatic plants, snails, and small fish in the case of larger specimens.

Spawning takes place early in the season, from March to May, on shallow, flooded banks and gravel beds. The ide is one of the first cyprinids to spawn and may travel considerable distances upstream for this purpose. After spawning, ide are hungry and particularly easy to catch.

Fishing techniques

Catching ide is varied because they respond to different methods:

  • Bread flake on the surface: The most spectacular method. An unweighted piece of bread flake on a size 8-10 hook, without float or weight, drifted towards rising ide. Excitement and precision!
  • Fly fishing: Dry flies or small nymphs cast to rising fish. Ide take a fly as eagerly as a trout. Particularly effective on warm summer evenings.
  • Float fishing: With a waggler at mid-water or just below the surface. Maggots, casters, or corn as bait. Feed regularly with loose maggots.
  • Light spinning: Small spinners (size 1-2) or micro-plugs. Larger ide hit lures with surprising aggression.

Use a light to medium rod (3.00-3.60m) with fine line (0.16-0.20mm). Ide fight hard and make fast runs — don't underestimate this fish.

In the Netherlands

The ide is a common species found throughout the Netherlands, from major rivers to canals, lakes, ponds, and city canals. The species thrives in diverse water types and is less tied to flowing water than barbel. The golden variant (golden ide) is widely stocked in ornamental ponds and parks and is a familiar sight in urban waters. Ide have a closed season from April 1 through the last Saturday of May. Ide is increasingly valued as a sport fish, especially by fly fishers and bread flake enthusiasts who target rising fish.
