Striped Seasnail
Liparis liparis
Identification
The sea snail is a small, tadpole-shaped fish of 7 to 15 cm with a rounded head tapering to a narrow tail. The skin is scaleless and gelatinous, smooth and slimy. Color varies from grey-brown to reddish-brown. Distinctive is the ventral suction disc, formed from fused pelvic fins, used to cling to rocks and seaweed.
Ecology
Lives in the intertidal zone and shallow coastal waters to about 30 meters, among rocks, seaweed, and mussel beds. Uses its suction cup to hold on in strong currents. Feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and fish eggs.
In the Netherlands
Found along the entire Dutch coast, especially in the Wadden Sea and Eastern Scheldt. Difficult to spot due to excellent camouflage.
