Identification
A small, stocky fish of 10 to 17 cm with a broad, flattened head and narrow tail section. Often greenish but can also be brown, red, or mottled. Characteristic long, sharp spine on the gill cover (pre-opercular spine) reaching to the gill opening.
Ecology
Lives in tidal pools and shallow rocky areas. Highly site-faithful: returns to the same pool after each tide. Feeds on shrimps, crabs, and small fish. Excellent camouflage ability.
In the Netherlands
Found in tidal pools along the Zeeland coast and near North Sea groynes. Regularly observed by rock poolers and snorkelers.
