Lesser Weever
Echiichthys vipera
Identification
The lesser weever is a compact bottom fish of only 10 to 15 cm — much smaller than the greater weever but with the same venomous spines on the first dorsal fin and gill covers. Color is sand-colored, perfectly camouflaged on sandy bottoms.
Behavior & ecology
Lives buried in shallow sand, often at just a few centimeters to meters of depth. This makes it the weever species beachgoers most commonly encounter. When disturbed, it stings with the venomous dorsal fin. The venom causes intense, burning pain lasting hours. First aid: immerse the sting in the hottest water tolerable (the venom is heat-sensitive).
In the Netherlands
The lesser weever is common along the entire Dutch coast and is the most feared fish on the beach. Dozens of beachgoers are stung every year, especially in summer at low tide. Water shoes offer protection.
