Identification

A stocky blenny of 15 to 25 cm. Most striking feature: branched tentacles above the eyes resembling horns. Robust body, blunt head. Brown to reddish-brown with dark transverse bands. Scaleless skin.

Ecology

Lives on rocky bottoms in shallow water, in crevices and holes. Territorial. Feeds on sea anemones, algae, and small invertebrates.

In the Netherlands

Rare. Occasionally observed on groynes and harbor walls in Zeeland. More common on rocky coasts further south.
