Identification

Similar to common sole but distinguished by a dark spot on the pectoral fin on the eyed side. Elongated oval body, up to 35 cm, sandy to greyish-brown. The nostrils on the blind side are noticeably enlarged.

Ecology

Lives on sandy bottoms in shallow coastal water to about 80 meters. Nocturnal. Feeds on worms, small crustaceans, and shellfish.

In the Netherlands

Rare in Dutch waters. Mainly distributed further south around the Bay of Biscay and Mediterranean. Occasional catches in the southern North Sea occur.
