Identification

A small, left-eyed flatfish of 15 to 25 cm with a nearly circular body. Dark brown upper side with scattered dark spots. Rough, scaly skin. The dorsal fin extends onto the head. Strongly flattened body.

Ecology

Lives on rocky bottoms in shallow to moderate depths (5 to 40 meters). Remarkably, it can cling to rocks with suction, even on vertical and overhanging surfaces. Feeds on small crustaceans and worms.

In the Netherlands

Rare due to limited rocky coastal habitat. Occasionally observed near wrecks and groynes in Zeeland. More common along British and Norwegian rocky coasts.
