Identification
The longest pipefish in European waters: up to 60 cm but extremely slender. Round in cross-section, dark brown to black with lighter rings. No tail fin — the tail tapers to a point.
Ecology
Unlike most pipefish, lives pelagically: swimming in open water, often among floating seaweed. The male carries eggs directly on the belly, without a brood pouch.
In the Netherlands
Occasionally observed in the North Sea and sometimes washed up on beaches.
