Identification
A small wrasse of 10 to 18 cm with an elongated body and pointed snout. Color varies from greenish-brown to olive with a dark spot on the mid-flank. Males more colorful with blue and orange accents.
Ecology
Lives in shallow coastal waters with seagrass and seaweed at 1 to 20 meters. Feeds on small snails, crustaceans, and worms found among the vegetation. Males build nests from seagrass.
In the Netherlands
Rare in the Netherlands. More southerly distribution. Occasional observations in Zeeland near seagrass beds.
