Identification

The solenette is a very small flatfish reaching only 13 cm. Oval, strongly flattened body, yellowish-brown upper side. The pectoral fin on the eyed side has a distinctive dark spot.

Ecology

Lives on soft, sandy and muddy bottoms at 5 to 450 meters, typically 20 to 80 meters. Feeds on tiny benthic animals. Active at dusk and night.

In the Netherlands

Common in the southern North Sea. No commercial value due to its tiny size; discarded as bycatch. Ecologically important as prey for larger fish.
