Eelpout

Identification

The eelpout is an elongated, eel-shaped fish of 20 to 40 cm. Slimy with almost invisibly small scales. Yellow-brown to greenish with dark spots. The dorsal, tail, and anal fins merge into one continuous fin fold, with a distinctive notch in the dorsal fin.

Behavior & ecology

One of the few viviparous (live-bearing) fish in the Netherlands: the female carries eggs internally and gives birth to fully developed young (up to 300 at once). Lives among rocks, seaweed, and shells in shallow coastal waters.

In the Netherlands

Common along the Dutch coast, Wadden Sea, and Zeeland waters. Used as a bio-indicator for coastal ecosystem health, as viviparous fish are sensitive to pollution.
