Identification
Montagu's sea snail closely resembles the common sea snail but is smaller (5 to 10 cm) and more slender. Also scaleless and gelatinous with a ventral suction disc. Color variable: brown, orange, or reddish, often with dark lateral stripes. Shorter dorsal fin than the common sea snail.
Ecology
Lives in shallow coastal waters among rocks and seaweed, especially in rock pools. Prefers slightly deeper and cooler water than the common species. Feeds on small crustaceans.
In the Netherlands
Found in the Wadden Sea and along the North Sea coast. Less common than the common sea snail.
