Identification
A sturdy fish of 25 to 40 cm with a high back and slightly sloping snout. Silvery-grey with golden-green sheen and dark, wavy stripes along the flanks. Small barbels on the lower jaw.
Ecology
Produces croaking and drumming sounds by vibrating the swim bladder. Lives in coastal waters and estuaries along the American east coast. Feeds eagerly on worms, shrimp, and small crustaceans on the bottom.
In the Netherlands
Extremely rare in Dutch waters, with only a single record. Likely arrived via ballast water or ocean currents.
