Identification

A small, stocky fish of 10 to 16 cm with a blunt, rounded head profile and large eyes set high. Olive-green to brown with dark spots. Scaleless and slimy skin. Single continuous dorsal fin.

Ecology

A typical tidal pool resident. Remains in pools at low tide and can survive briefly out of water. Territorial and site-faithful. Feeds on algae, barnacles, and small invertebrates.

In the Netherlands

Found on hard substrates along the coast: dykes, groynes, and harbor walls. Especially in Zeeland and the Wadden Sea.
