Identification

A small sole of 15 to 25 cm with an oval body and a relatively thick, fleshy back. Grey-brown upper side with dark transverse bands. Small pectoral fin. Dorsal fin starts on the head.

Ecology

Lives on sand and gravel bottoms at 20 to 400 meters, mainly in warmer waters. Nocturnal.

In the Netherlands

Rare in the North Sea. More southwestern distribution, from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean.
