Identification
A recently split species virtually identical to the oriental weatherloach (M. anguillicaudatus). Elongated, eel-like, 15 to 25 cm, with ten barbels. Distinction is only possible through genetic analysis or detailed color pattern examination.
Ecology
Similar ecology to the oriental weatherloach: muddy, shallow waters, intestinal breathing in low oxygen, high tolerance for poor conditions.
In the Netherlands
Status in the Netherlands is unclear. Records identified as M. anguillicaudatus may partly belong to this species.
