Identification

A recently split species virtually identical to the oriental weatherloach (M. anguillicaudatus). Elongated, eel-like, 15 to 25 cm, with ten barbels. Distinction is only possible through genetic analysis or detailed color pattern examination.

Ecology

Similar ecology to the oriental weatherloach: muddy, shallow waters, intestinal breathing in low oxygen, high tolerance for poor conditions.

Status in the Netherlands is unclear. Records identified as M. anguillicaudatus may partly belong to this species.
