Identification
The hoodwinker sunfish was scientifically described only in 2017, having been overlooked for centuries. Very similar to the ocean sunfish but with a more slender body and smoother, more rounded clavus profile. Adults lack the bumps and ridges that develop on the ocean sunfish. Reaches about 2.4 meters.
Ecology
Similar lifestyle to the ocean sunfish: open ocean, diet of jellyfish and gelatinous plankton. Appears to prefer cooler waters in the southern hemisphere but has also been confirmed in the North Atlantic.
In the Netherlands
It is unknown how often this species appears off the Dutch coast. Specimens previously identified as ocean sunfish may belong to this species.
