Identification

A reddish-orange fish of 20 to 35 cm, clearly smaller than the golden redfish. Compact build with large eyes and venomous dorsal spines. Underside lighter, sometimes pinkish.

Ecology

Lives in deep water at 100 to 400 meters along the Norwegian coast and northern Atlantic. As the species name indicates, it is viviparous: females give birth to live young. Feeds on small crustaceans and fish.

In the Netherlands

Not found in the North Sea. Lives further north, mainly along the Norwegian coast and around Iceland. Of limited commercial importance.
