Scorpaenidae Season Open

Identification

The deepwater redfish is a sturdily built fish to 50 cm with a striking red color across the entire body. The large eyes betray its deep-water lifestyle. The head bears sturdy spines and ridges — typical of the scorpionfish family to which it belongs. The lower jaw protrudes slightly. Large mouth.

Ecology

Lives at 200 to 600 meters depth in the North Atlantic, from Iceland to the Norwegian Sea. One of the longest-lived fish in the world: specimens over 70 years old have been documented. Grows extremely slowly, making it highly vulnerable to overfishing. Live-bearing — females carry thousands of embryos.

In the Netherlands

Does not occur in the shallow Dutch North Sea. Found in the deep Norwegian Sea and Icelandic waters. Known in the Netherlands as imported fish fillet, often sold as "redfish fillet."
