Roodbaars

Sebastes norvegicus

Scorpaenidae Season Open

Identification

A striking bright red to orange-red fish of 30 to 50 cm (over 1 meter maximum). Sturdy, laterally compressed body with large eyes and a wide mouth. The dorsal fin carries sharp venomous spines. The lower jaw protrudes slightly.

Ecology

Lives in deep water at 100 to 500 meters, often near rocky substrates and seamounts. One of the longest-lived fish in the world: specimens over 75 years old have been documented. Growth is slow. Viviparous: females give birth to thousands of live larvae.

In the Netherlands

Not found in the North Sea proper but of major commercial importance in the deep North Atlantic fishery. The firm white flesh is valued as a quality fish. Stocks are under pressure from overfishing and slow reproduction.
