Identification
The Indian driftfish is a small, oval-shaped fish (15-25 cm) with a silvery, laterally compressed body. The eyes are relatively large and the tail deeply forked. It has small, easily detached scales and a dark back fading to silvery flanks.
Ecology
An oceanic species normally found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean and western Pacific. Lives in the open ocean, often associated with jellyfish and floating debris.
In the Netherlands
An extremely rare vagrant. Records in the North Sea are exceptional and likely involve specimens carried far outside their normal range by warm ocean currents.
