Identification
The two-spotted clingfish is a tiny fish of only 3 to 5 cm. The body is flattened with a broad head. On the underside is a suction disc (formed from modified pelvic fins) that allows it to firmly attach to rocks and shells. Distinctive are the two dark spots on either side on either side of the suction disc. Color varies from red-brown to yellow-brown.
Ecology
Lives on rocky substrates, under stones, and on shells in tidal pools and shallow coastal water. Uses the suction disc to resist currents and waves. Feeds on small crustaceans and worms.
In the Netherlands
The two-spotted clingfish is very rare in the Netherlands. The sandy Dutch coast offers little suitable rocky habitat. Occasionally found on the Zeeland breakwaters or in the Grevelingen.
