Identification
The three-bearded rockling is an elongated, eel-like fish of 30 to 50 cm — the largest of the rocklings. Color is variable: red-brown to dark brown, often mottled. Distinctive: three barbels — one long on the chin and two shorter near the nostrils. The first dorsal fin is reduced to a vibrating skin fold.
Ecology
Lives on rocky substrates and in tidal pools, from the low water line to 120 meters depth. Hides in rock crevices during the day. Nocturnal; hunts crabs, shrimp, and small fish.
In the Netherlands
Found along the Zeeland coast, on breakwaters, and in the Oosterschelde. More common than the five-bearded rockling but still uncommon due to limited rocky habitat.
