Identification
A small gadoid of 15 to 25 cm with a coppery to yellowish-brown body. Characteristic long chin barbel. Deeper body than the Norway pout. Three dorsal fins and two anal fins. A dark spot at the pectoral fin base.
Ecology
Lives on rocky bottoms and wrecks at 15 to 200 meters, shallower than the Norway pout. Feeds on small crustaceans, shrimps, and fish larvae. Forms small schools. Rarely exceeds four years of age.
In the Netherlands
Fairly common in the southern North Sea and English Channel. Caught as bycatch but of little commercial value due to small size. Ecologically important as prey.
