Gadidae Season Open

Identification

The blue ling resembles the common ling but is smaller (up to 1.5 meters) and more slender. The color is more blue-grey than bronze-brown. The chin barbel is shorter. The anal fin starts further forward.

Ecology

Lives at greater depths than the common ling, often 200 to 1,000 meters, on muddy to rocky substrates. Feeds on fish and crustaceans.

In the Netherlands

The blue ling is very rare in Dutch waters. The North Sea is relatively shallow for this deep-water species.
