Identification

The longest stickleback: up to 22 cm, with a very slender, elongated body. Characteristic 14 to 16 short dorsal spines (more than any other stickleback). Brown to greenish-brown. Long, pointed snout.

Ecology

Lives in shallow coastal water among seagrass and seaweed. Male builds a nest from seaweed and guards the eggs. Solitary.

In the Netherlands

Found along the coast, in the Wadden Sea and Zeeland waters. Not fished.
