Identification

A right-eyed flatfish of 20 to 35 cm with an oval body and rough scales. Greyish-brown to yellowish-brown upper side with faint dark spots. Relatively large mouth with visible teeth.

Ecology

Lives on sand and mud bottoms at 10 to 400 meters. Feeds on worms, crustaceans, brittle stars, and small fish. Cold-water species.

In the Netherlands

Found mainly in the northern North Sea. Less common in the southern part. Caught as bycatch in beam trawl fisheries.
