Identification
The witch is a right-eyed flatfish of 30 to 50 cm with a remarkably elongated, narrow body. Uniform greyish-brown upper side, very small mouth, and straight lateral line. Smooth, slimy skin.
Ecology
Lives on soft muddy bottoms at great depth, usually 100 to 400 meters. Feeds on worms and small crustaceans. Slow-growing.
In the Netherlands
Found in the deeper parts of the North Sea, mainly in the north. Commercially fished; considered a tasty flatfish.
