Identification
The snake blenny is an extremely elongated, snake-like fish of 25 to 40 cm. Laterally compressed body with very small scales. Yellowish-brown to olive-green with a row of dark spots along the base of the long dorsal fin. Small, pointed head.
Ecology
Lives on muddy and sandy-mud bottoms at 20 to 250 meters depth. Burrows into sediment. Feeds on small worms and crustaceans. A northern, cold-water species.
In the Netherlands
Scarce in the northern North Sea. Rarely observed due to its burrowing lifestyle.
