Naked Goby

Identification

The naked goby is a small goby of 4 to 6 cm with an unscaled, translucent body — hence the name “naked” goby. Color is pale brown to greyish with faint dark crossbands. The head is large relative to the body. Pelvic fins are fused into a small suction disc.

Ecology

Originally from the east coast of North America, from Canada to Mexico, where it inhabits estuaries, harbors, and oyster reefs. Lives among empty oyster shells and shellfish beds. Feeds on small crustaceans and worms.

In the Netherlands

Found in the Netherlands as an exotic species, likely introduced via ballast water from ocean-going ships. With three records in our database, extremely rare. It is unclear whether the species can establish itself in the Netherlands.
