Identification
The black goby is the largest native goby in the Netherlands, up to 15 cm. Stocky and dark colored: brown to nearly black. The pelvic fins are fused into a suction cup — characteristic of all gobies.
Ecology
Lives on sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow coastal waters, estuaries, and harbours. Males build nests under shells or stones and aggressively guard the eggs.
In the Netherlands
Common in the Wadden Sea, Oosterschelde, Westerschelde, and along the North Sea coast.
