Identification
A small goby of 10 to 16 cm from the Ponto-Caspian region. Elongated, cylindrical body, light brown to grey-brown with dark spots and stripes. Distinguished by the unscaled (naked) area on the nape. Pelvic fins fused into a suction disc.
Ecology
Lives in rivers and lakes with rocky and gravelly bottoms. Feeds on insect larvae, worms, and small crustaceans. Invasive in western European rivers, spreading via shipping canals.
In the Netherlands
Not yet confirmed in the Netherlands, but related Ponto-Caspian gobies are already present. Establishment in the major Dutch rivers is expected.
