Identification
Phoxinus septimaniae is a small minnow species originally described from southern France. Visually virtually identical to the common minnow, reliably identified only through genetic analysis. A small, slender fish reaching about 10 cm.
Ecology
Similar to other minnows: schooling fish in cool, flowing streams with clean water and gravel substrate.
In the Netherlands
Distribution in northwestern Europe is barely studied. Occurrence in Dutch or Belgian border streams is conceivable but unconfirmed. One of many cryptic species being revealed by molecular research.
